Our Story

Discover the storied legacy of Costner-Maloy & Brown Funeral Home, Newport's oldest funeral service provider. From its early 20th-century beginnings as Willis-Larue Company to its recent merger forming a new chapter in compassionate care, this presentation will guide you through a century of dedicated service and community commitment. Join us as we explore the milestones that have shaped our identity and our enduring commitment to honoring life.

Early Beginnings

Established in the early 1900s by George Willis and Hurley Larue, as the Willis-Larue Company which served Newport from Main Street, laying the foundation for over a century of compassionate service.

Transition and Growth

Purchased by E. Claude Balch, Sr. in 1932 and operated until 1940, the business transitioned to Maloy-Sugges Funeral Home when moved to its current location in 1940. By 1945, under Voyle Maloy and Ruby Stuart, it became known solely as Maloy Funeral Home.

Renovation & Modernization

The 1957 renovation introduced modern comforts like air conditioning, electric heating, and a new chapel, solidifying its place as a premier facility. Voyle Maloy, deeply involved in the community, also served as Newport alderman.

Leadership Changes

After Voyle Maloy's passing in 1979, Cleo Balch took over management, maintaining high standards and overseeing operations until 1991. This period marked a steadfast commitment to service and community.

The Costner Era Begins

In 1991, Donald L. Costner acquired controlling interest, renaming it to Costner-Maloy Funeral Home in 1994 after securing full ownership. A native of Cocke County, Costner's leadership brought numerous updates and modernizations.

Merger and Future Vision

In September 2022, Costner-Maloy Funeral Home merged with Brown Funeral Home, creating Costner-Maloy & Brown Funeral Home. All operations were consolidated at the former Brown Funeral Home location, ushering in a new era of service from 338 East Main Street.

Continuing the Legacy

As we reflect on over a century of service, Costner-Maloy & Brown Funeral Home remains committed to the principles of compassion, innovation, and community focus that have defined our legacy. Through continuous improvement and a deep understanding of the needs of the families we serve, we pledge to maintain the highest standards of care.
