We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Brown Funeral Home
Arvil Lee “Gene” Napier, age 81 of Newport, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2022.
Gene retired last year after working in the service department at Stinnett Automotive Group for 35 years. As a young man, he worked in the coal mines of Harlan, Kentucky. He came to Newport in the early 1970s as the produce manager at Cas Walker’s grocery store. He also worked for Bush Brothers and the 411 Exxon Truck Pit. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and had the honor of changing the oil for such celebrities as Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Travis Tritt. He loved fishing, and for many years, he reserved his Wednesdays for taking his grandson, Terry to the lake.
Gene was a kind and generous man, who was well-loved by his family as well as his community. He will be remembered for his determination, and the way he put others before himself. He was also known for coming up with funny (and often appropriate) nicknames for folks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cora & Edward Napier; siblings, Butch, Bruce, Randall, Evelene, Sue, Judy, & Ruby; son, Roger Clay “Rabbit” Napier; stepson, Randall Leffler; grandsons, Mark & Bobby Halcomb; son-in-law, Bill Kimbrough; daughter-in-law, Pat Napier; and grandson-in-law, Ben Collins.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Cora Napier; children, Carlissa Napier, Rita Halcomb, Larry Napier, Katie Leffler, and “adopted son” Randall “Terry” Leffler, who was known as his “little bruiser”; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; special friends, Larry Sane, Dean Ball, Gene Costner, Mark Stinnett, Johnny Davis & Bo Payne; as well as various other extended family members and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00PM Friday, April 29, 2022 at the Powell Valley Cemetery in Dryden, Virginia. Family & friends may also offer condolences online at www.brownfuneralhomenewport.com
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Celebrate Life Cancer Support Group or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
